Dear Homeowners,
Has the wild swing in weather left your beautiful interiors looking a little… off?
“Why is there a sudden gap between my wood paneling and ceiling?”
“Why are the seams between my wallpaper and wood already lifting?!”
You're not alone. These are two of the most common—and frustrating—high-end finishing failures.
The good news: they are completely preventable.
In this guide, our Independent Design Lab reveals the root causes and provides the professional-grade solutions used on official projects. Get the permanent fix your renovation deserves—save this article and share it with your contractor before your next project!
Issue 01: Gaps at the Junction Between Wall and Ceiling Wood Veneer, Affecting Aesthetics
Problem Analysis:
- The finishing relationship between the wood veneer and the top finish (e.g., ceiling paint, cornice) was not sufficiently considered.
- The inherent shrinkage issue of the wood veneer panels was not taken into account during construction.
- Climate variations and changes in material moisture content can cause the wood veneer to deform, leading to these issues.
Prevention and Solution:
- During later detailed design of this area, fully consider the finishing relationship; reserve a 10mm x 10mm process seam at the top edge of the wooden decorative surface.
- Reserve natural expansion joints at the junctions between the ceiling and the wood veneer.
- Select wood veneer panels with a smaller coefficient of deformation.
Issue 02: Uneven and Lifting Joints Between Wallpaper and Wood Veneer
Problem Analysis:
- In cases involving joints between wallpaper and wood veneer, the jointing relationship was not adequately considered, failing to leave process grooves or choose reasonable finishing techniques.
- During wallpaper installation, excessively high ambient humidity in the space or a damp base layer can cause the wallpaper to curl and lift.
- The project department did not brief the workers promptly, and the termination detail between the wooden veneer and wallpaper was handled improperly.
Prevention and Solution:
- When detailing this area, note that wallpaper and wood veneer should not use direct butt-joint termination methods; consider incorporating reserved process grooves.
- To prevent later wallpaper curling, it is recommended to install the wallpaper first, then install the wooden veneer over it (on top of the finished product protection) to press down the wallpaper edge.
- During wallpaper application, strictly control the ambient humidity within the space and the moisture content of the base layer. Construction should only proceed once the conditions meet the requirements for wallpaper installation.
